Motorists Face Higher Parking Rates And Maximum Parking of 2 Hours In KL City Centre From July 16
Starting from 16 July 2016, motorists parking in Kuala Lumpur’s city centre will be charged a higher parking rate fee of RM2.00 for the first hour and RM3.00 for the second hour. Also, their parking duration will be limited to two hours only. After the two hours, motorists will not be allowed to top up the meter. Motorists who surpasses the two hour limit will have their vehicles clamped or towed away. No summons will be issued.
These both applies for metered parking only. Presently, the metered parking rates are between RM0.50 to RM0.80 per hour and no maximum parking duration.
According to Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, the two-hour ruling will deter motorists from hogging parking space for long hours and depriving others from a parking space.
This was also to encourage the public to use public transport when they come into the city, as well as to encourage the public to park at designated parking centres and walk, he said. If you need to be around for more than 2 hours, best to park in a shopping complex or private carparks or take the public transport (Read: The Cheapest Places To Park Your Car in Bukit Bintang).
He further explained that the ruling will start at Central Business District (CBD) areas like Bukit Bintang, KLCC, Ampang and other areas in the city centre.
Tengku Adnan added that they were still studying on whether to implement the two-hour ruling in Brickfields, but said that townships like Bangsar, Kepong, Hartamas will not be affected just yet.
According to the minister, the Kuala Lumpur City Hall will also be installing more electronic boards to show the number of available parking space inside complexes and commercial buildings to deter people from parking on roads.
