Price Of Rice To Decrease
The price of rice is expected to see a decrease after Padiberas Nasional Bhd (Bernas) lost their monopoly on rice imports.
Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Salahuddin Ayub said the ministry, the National Agriculture Advisory council and the corporate sector would now have to come out with an appropriate business model to import rice for the country.
He said Bernas will still be importing rice, but will face competition as there are other companies also importing the good.
Salahuddin said this would be beneficial for consumers and it was important to have feedback from Malaysians regarding the country’s rice imports and distribution.
“We want to reduce the risk of being too dependent on a single party,” he said.
He said Malaysia currently imports most of its rice from China, Thailand and Vietnam.
He added that importers are now able to source its rice imports from any other country.
