Government Sets 30 September Deadline For ISPs To Lower Prices

Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo has given Malaysian internet service providers one last deadline for lowering broadband prices. Deo also said that no more time extensions would be given.

The minister had originally directed ISPs to submit proposals for lower broadband plan prices by the end of August; but that passed with little movement from any of the major players. Telekom Malaysia announced a new 100Mbps UniFi connection for RM129; although it still missed the 30 August deadline.

Now, these ISPs will have to submit new proposals for cheaper broadband plans by 30 September. No further extensions are being offered.

The reasoning for the current extension is supposedly due to the Malaysia Communications and Multimedia Commission being busy with the implementation of the Sales and Services Tax. The issues surrounding the sale of prepaid top up cards were used as an example.
