PM Says GLC Interns Must Be Paid
During his keynote speech prior to the Budget 2024 Consultation programme at the Finance Ministry last week, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said that Government-Linked Companies (GLC) who offer internship programmes must pay their interns a monthly stipend of at least RM800.
While the prime minister agrees that individuals apply for internships primarily to undergo training and gain exposure and experience, he also said that some interns may also be underprivileged and need to support themselves or their families.
“To set a good example, the Finance Ministry has instructed all GLCs hiring students undergoing practical training or internships to pay them at least RM800 monthly,” he said during his speech.
Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said the move to introduce the allowance follows a suggestion by a Form Six student during a dialogue session.
“Students can also provide us with good suggestions. While we listen to expert advice, input from students is also valuable,” he added.
Anwar also said that around 35,000 jobs will be made available by GLCs, including those for technical and vocational education and training graduates. In addition to this, he announced an additional RM600 in Sumbangan Asas Rahmah aid to assist approximately 200,000 hardcore poor recipients in obtaining food essentials.
