Youth And Sports Ministry Launches RM10 Per Day Budget Hostel

The Youth and Sports Ministry has launched the Youth Capsule @IYCResidence, a budget hostel facility designed to help youths and job seekers in the city. This was made public in a press release issued by the ministry yesterday.

Located at the International Youth Centre (IYC) in Cheras, the facility boasts five dormitories containing 54 beds, a kitchen, a self service laundromat and internet access.

The facility is open for any Malaysian aged from 18 to 40 years old who are either;

  • Looking for a job
  • Secured a job but without residence
  • Undergoing industrial training/internship/practicum

Beds available from 15 September

The minister also shared the launch information on her Facebook page to highlight the initiative and facilities offered at an affordable price.

In a report from FMT, the Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh stated that the facility will be available starting from the 15th of September 2023, and will cost only RM10 per day.

“This programme targets youths who intend to undergo industrial training, are looking for jobs and people who have a job but do not have a place to stay.

“I hope this (initiative) will encourage more youths to get jobs (in the city), particularly those from rural areas,” she told reporters after the launching ceremony yesterday.

Youth make up 38% of the homeless population

During the launch, Hannah Yeoh shared that the programme managed by IYC began because statistics showed that young people aged between 18 to 30 years old make up 38% of the homeless population in Kuala Lumpur.

“It is difficult for us to secure funds to build new facilities, so we are utilising existing facilities to implement programmes like this.

“I urge government agencies to create similar facilities for young people,” she said.

The joint press release from the Youth And Sports Ministry and IYC also stated that the Youth Capsule programme is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals’ slogan of “leave no one behind”.
