Only 1 Person Certified To Install EV Charging Stations In Malaysia
Human Resources Minister V. Sivakumar has recently revealed that there is only one person in the country that currently holds the appropriate certification to install and maintain electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.
This lack of certified professionals is one of the reasons why the ministry is accelerating efforts to intensify EV related certification courses.
The sole individual who managed to obtain certification did so under the National Occupational Skills Standards (NOSS), which outlines and specifies the competencies required for a skilled worker allowed to carry out such EV related works.
Back in May 2023, the Skills Development Department, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Human Resources Ministry, introduced the NOSS standards for EV charging station. This covers the maintenance and repair of EV stations in order to help keep up with the demands of a growing EV industry.
“The ministry hopes the number of skilled graduates in this field will increase in the future through the initiatives we are carrying out, including promotional activities,” said Minister Sivakumar in a parliament session on Nov 2. He said this in answering a question on the number of certificate and diploma holders in this field.

He also mentioned that there are currently around 1,246 charging stations, eight certified individuals who are licensed to service Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), and 82 individuals possess qualifications to service hybrid vehicles in the country.
It was also stated that Malaysia hopes to have at least 10,000 EV charging stations by 2025 and is currently working towards establishing itself as an EV hub.
Sivakumar also revealed that his ministry is collaborating with the Investment, Trade, and Industry Ministry (MITI) to ensure an adequate workforce to support the growth of the EV sector in Malaysia.
