TNG Digital Sdn. Bhd. (TNG Digital), announced earlier this year its plan to become the first eWallet in Malaysia to implement 100% electronic Know-Your-Customer (eKYC) verification.
According to TNG this decision was made in order to improve upon user protection and security. In addition to this, eKYC verification will also be required to unlock exclusive features for the eWallet.
Mandatory eKYC for all TNG eWallet users
Users have been given around 10 months to verify their TNG eWallet accounts. This mandatory eKYC verification is set to be fully implemented on 20 December 2024.
For those who are not in the know, eKYC is an automated process that users can utilise to verify their identity digitally, offering a whole new level of convenience and another layer of security.
In order to use eKYC, users will simply need to upload a photo of their ID card and take a selfie for facial recognition, thus reducing the need for in-person visits and annoying paperwork.
The system securely matches the user’s ID with their photo to confirm their identity. Verified users gain access to enhanced protection, as eKYC adds an extra layer of security by reducing the risk of fraud and unauthorised access. Once verified, TNG eWallet will grant the user access to additional perks, features, and products.
100% eKYC to identify and uncover mule accounts
The introduction of 100% eKYC verification will help TNG Digital to identify and uncover mule accounts and fraud cases. This proactive approach not only protects users but also contributes to a safer and more resilient digital financial landscape.
“Security is our top priority at TNG Digital. Implementing full eKYC is a bold and necessary move, making us the first eWallet to take this step because protecting our users is non-negotiable. This measure is crucial in enhancing platform security and reducing the risk of account takeovers,” said Alan Ni, Chief Executive Officer of TNG Digital.
Access to eWallet will be limited without verification
For those who have yet to verify their TNG eWallet accounts, you may find that you are limited to a relatively low eWallet balance and can only access the most basic payment and toll features on the app. As of 20 December 2024, eKYC verification will be required for new users to use the app at all.
Existing unverified users will see their access gradually restricted. These users will face increasing limitations until their TNG eWallet accounts are fully verified, and eventually they will lose access to their eWallet entirely if not verified.
How to verify your TNG account
Users can verify their eWallet account by tapping ‘Not Verified’ on the app’s profile page. Malaysian users may use either MyKad or MyTentera for eKYC. Meanwhile, Malaysian Permanent Residents and other nationalities can use their passport for verification. Once verified, users will unlock these benefits:
- Money-back Guarantee: Protection against any unauthorised transactions that occur without user’s involvement
- Increased eWallet limit compared to the lower, non-eKYC wallet balance
- Transfer feature: Send money easily to friends and loved ones
