The Minister of Communication, Fahmi Fadzil has urged the public to be wary of a new scam that involves an AI deepfake of popular singer, Datuk Siti Nurhaliza.

Fahmi Fadzil spoke on the scam at the Ministry of Communications’ monthly assembly saying that while AI can bring a lot of good in the world, there are some parties who are misusing it for ill gotten gains.

He stated that Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza has revealed in an Instagram post a few days ago that an AI deepfake of her likeness is being used in a video call scam.

Hence, Fahmi Fadzil urged everyone to be cautious and make sure that any information they got is genuine or produced by an AI application.

Fahmi Fadzil also called for Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), Malaysia’s public broadcaster to educate the public on the dangers of AI deepfakes.

“I have never held a cash giveaway” – Datuk Siti

Yesterday, Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza revealed in an Instagram Reel that her likeness has been used in scam tactics by scammers.

In the posting, Datuk Siti stated that the scammers even used an AI deepfake of her voice, and an edited version of her previous live streams, to make it look like she was video calling the victims.

The scammer will then proceed to use this AI deepfake of Siti Nurhaliza’s voice to ask the victim to transfer money to a bank account, promising that the cash prize will be given to them after the deposit.

Datuk Siti Nurhaliza also stated in her Instagram posting that she has never held cash giveaway contests, so the public should never believe any messages, video calls, or anything else that says otherwise.
