Government Ends Puspakom’s Monopoly On Motor Vehicle Inspections

The government has recently appointed three companies to carry out motor vehicle inspections services. This historic decision ends the long-standing monopoly that Puspakom has held on the market.
The appointed companies include: Wawasan Bintang, Pakatan Petroleum, and Beriman Gold.
Transport minister Loke Siew Fook said the selection was a result of a rigorous evaluation process and was in line with the Cabinet’s decision on March 17, 2023 to open mandatory vehicle inspections under the Road Transport Act 1987 to qualified firms.
At a recent press conference, Loke mentioned that the expansion of motor vehicle inspection services aims to ensure better service and road safety for all Malaysians. Additionally, the companies were chosen based on their financial strength, regulatory compliance, and suitability of proposed inspection centre locations.
For the most part, Wawasan Bintang will operate mostly in Port Klang, Gua Musang and Mersing. Pakatan Petroleum will service the Rawang and Temerloh areas. Beriman Gold’s efforts will be mainly located in Sarawak at Kuching and Serian, with additional plans to expand services to East Malaysia.
The companies have been given 24 months to complete their infrastructure setup, including premises and equipment. Once they have met all regulatory and operational standards, they will receive their licenses to begin inspections.
Only after meeting all the regulatory and operational standards will they receive the licences to begin inspections,” he said.
It should be noted that Puspakom will also continue to operate as normal, with all its branches continuing operations.
Loke also announced that the second phase of applications for motor vehicle inspection operators will be open from March to June.
