As mentioned by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak during the tabulation of Budget 2015 last year October, Malaysians now have access to the Shoppers Guide handbook to help them compare prices of 500 popular basic necessities before and after the Goods and Service Tax (GST) is implemented.

The handbook was launched by the Minister of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (MDTCC), Datuk Seri Hasan Malek. At the launch, Hasan said the ministry has printed approximately two million copies of this handbook and they are up for distribution.

Average Price of Good and Services in One Handbook

Hasan also said that the price quoted in the handbook was based on the average price of good and services in November 2014 and is effective until June 2015. The prices will thereafter be reviewed and updated, and this would be done as often as possible to reflect real time prices.

The prices are based on data collected by the ministry and Custom’s study on the impact of the GST. The changes in price depends on the economic situation, including global crude oil prices and cost of production.

Hasan said the handbook had been divided into six zones – central, east, south, north, Sabah and Sarawak as prices of goods and services differ by different zone.

The GST Shoppers Guide can also be accessed from January 30, 2015 at the ministry’s official website.
