Government Subsidises Domestic Flight Tickets For University Students

The government has just announced that it will be launching an initiative to subsidise up to RM300 on the purchase of domestic flight tickets for public university students in Malaysia.

The initiative costs approximately RM16.8 million and is expected to benefit up to 56,000 public university students across the nation. It is set to begin from 15 August 2023.

According to Transport Minister Anthony Loke,  the initiative will be implemented through a credit shell where participating airlines will issue a digital voucher worth RM300 to each eligible student to redeem for purchasing flight tickets for domestic routes. The domestic routes cover flights between Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan.

However, Loke also cautioned that the subsidy is only valid for one-way or return economy class flight tickets between the student’s place of origin and place of study. He also mentioned that if the ticket purchased costs less than RM300, the balance of the digital voucher could be used for the next ticket purchase.

Students must redeem the voucher by 31st October 2023. Once redeemed, the voucher can be used to purchase flight tickets from Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, Batik Air, Firefly and MYAirline.

In order to apply for the subsidy, public university students will need to check their eligibility for the initiative through the Transport Ministry’s website, which will be available at a later date.
