The Transport Ministry has unveiled the new road tax rates for electric vehicles (EVs), with the Road Transport Minister, Anthony Loke unveiling the new rates earlier than expected.

Although EV users right now are enjoying a road tax exemption, the new road tax rates are still a reason for EV users to celebrate, as it is much cheaper than the current rates that were first determined in 2019.

Adding into that, the new road tax rates for EVs are not just cheaper than the one first introduced in 2019, reports have also stated that the road tax rates set for EVs are lower than vehicles with internal combustion engines (ICE), which is inline with the government’s policy of providing incentives to encourage more EVs ownership.

The new EV road taxes will come into effect on January 1, 2026, when the current road tax exemption for EVs ends.

EV road tax can be as low as RM40

The new road tax rates start at RM20 at the very lowest tier, from 1 watt to 49.9 kW, but this will never apply, seeing that the minimum output of EVs are never going to be that low.

From there, any EVs with an output of up to 100,000 watt will be charged with a RM10 increment for every 9999 watts. Meaning EVs with a 50,000 watt output will be charged a RM30 road tax fee, RM40 for 60,000 watts, and so on.

Above 100,000 watts, a RM20 increment is in place for every 9999 watts, and EVs above 200,000 watts will be charged a RM30 increment.

And for the most powerful EVs belonging to the 310,001 to 410,000 watt (410 kW) band, expect to pay anywhere from RM615 to RM1,065, with each 9.9 kW block increase set at RM50.

Cheaper revised EV road tax rates

This is much cheaper than the previous road tax rates set by JPJ, and here’s a few examples to help you visualise this;

Under the new road tax rates, the Ora Good Cat will pay only RM80 for their road tax, as opposed to RM324 under the previous rates.

Meanwhile, BYD Dolphin Dynamic Standard Range owners will only have to pay RM70 annually for their road tax, and the same goes for Neta V owners as well.

Even the more expensive and high powered cars are benefitting from this change, as Tesla Model 3 owners will now only have to pay RM280, compared to the RM2590 that they will have to shell out under the previous road tax rates.

In other news, the rates for electric motorcycles remain unchanged, with the ministry saying that the existing rate of RM9 to RM42 for e-motorbikes is low enough. The Ministry of Transport also added that people with disabilities will be exempted from paying road tax for one EV.
