Securities Commission Fintech Conference Goes Virtual
The three-day SCxSC Fintech Conference organised by Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) is taking place virtually this year from 5 to 7 October 2020.
This is the seventh edition of the event and going virtual has allowed SC to bring on board panellists from United States, Australia, United Kingdom, and the Middle East to join Malaysian experts to share insights on digital trends.
This free virtual event will cover topics such as local fintech players navigating the ‘new normal’, investment behaviour in turbulent times and the role of fintech in responsible fundraising and investing.
In his welcome remarks this morning, SC Chairman Datuk Syed Zaid Albar had highlighted the encouraging growth in investment activity this year.
“We are pleased to see a considerable increase in individual investor participation via digital investment managers, ECF and P2P financing platforms, digital asset exchanges and online brokers,” he said.
Key highlights achieved in Malaysian fintech this year:
- Equity crowdfunding (ECF) and peer-to-peer (P2P platforms raised funds totalling over 1 billion ringgit, benefitting more than 2,500 MSMEs.
- New account openings through online-only brokers grew by more than 270% this year.
- 3 digital asset exchanges approved by the SC last year have opened more than 400,000 accounts with value of trades surpassed RM 100 million in August this year.
- 3 more digital investment management licences issued this year, bringing total to seven and close to 90,000 new accounts opened this year..
